Two Harvard Athletes Set Out to Redefine the Protein Bar

Date:

Business Highlight: Skye

Skye is a rising nutrition brand built on a straightforward mission. Create a product with real ingredients, responsible sourcing, and performance-level quality. The founders, two former Harvard athletes, developed the product to solve a problem they experienced every day as competitors. They wanted a protein bar that supported training, recovery, and long-term health without relying on processed ingredients or additives.

What Motivated the Creation of Skye

Ciaran and Elisha both came from competitive athletic backgrounds. Ciaran, who played Harvard basketball and received more than 30 Division 1 offers, grew up in a home where processed foods were not part of the routine. His dad practiced functional medicine, so clean eating was the norm. While his teammates reached for Uncrustables and Gushers, he often relied on simple whole foods that did not match the convenience of what others were eating.

As he reached higher levels of competition, he saw how much clean nutrition affected performance. He recovered faster, had more consistent energy, and experienced fewer injuries. When he arrived at Harvard, he expected the athletic program to reflect that same standard. Instead, team snacks were packed with sugar and additives, and he noticed the gap immediately.

Elisha, who played on the Harvard tennis team, had a similar experience. He dealt with several injuries early in his athletic career and noticed that better nutrition directly helped him stay healthy and stay on the court. When he took time off to prioritize his health, he realized that many products targeted at athletes were full of inflammatory ingredients. Clean nutrition became central to his routine.

Both athletes reached the same conclusion. The market was full of products that were convenient but not clean, or clean but not practical. As they explained in their interview, “We felt there were plenty of products on the market that either had great ingredients but tasted bad or had great macronutrient profiles but terrible ingredients.” That understanding pushed them to create something better.

What Makes Skye Different

The team set two simple rules when formulating their product. The bar needed to taste good, and every ingredient needed to be of the highest quality.

Most protein snacks on the market fall into one of two categories. They either taste good but rely heavily on processed ingredients, or they pride themselves on clean formulas but sacrifice taste and texture. Skye focused on bridging that gap by returning to whole ingredients and developing a bar that any athlete or consumer could trust.

Ciaran, Elisha, and their food scientist Thomas spent months testing recipes in their own kitchen. They refined flavor, texture, and macronutrient balance until they had a product that met both standards: clean and enjoyable. As they described, “Ingredient quality and integrity are not things we will compromise on.”

Ingredient Sourcing With Intention

Skye designed its ingredient sourcing with purpose. Their primary ingredient, 100 percent dark chocolate, is taken from a part of the supply chain that meets ethical and sustainable expectations. They chose not to work with cacao sources in West Africa due to well-documented labor conditions in that region. Instead, they partnered with suppliers in Peru and personally visited farms to confirm the practices behind the ingredient.

All other ingredients, including raw honey, are sourced from inside the United States. These ingredients come from family-owned farms and undergo testing before being used. Their sourcing philosophy is clear: “Every ingredient undergoes quality testing and sampling before we use it, so we can guarantee that whatever we deliver is something we feel 100 percent confident consuming ourselves.”

The Challenges of Building the Brand

As with any new product-based business, the road was not smooth. The founders described delays, pivots, and difficult decisions that marked the early stages of building Skye. One of the biggest challenges came in August when they made the decision to change manufacturers right before their initial production run. Although it delayed launch, it protected the quality standard they were unwilling to compromise.

They now feel confident in their manufacturing team and believe the move was important for the long-term direction of the brand.

What Customers Can Expect Next

Skye is currently focused on building the best version of their product and creating a streamlined, efficient business. They plan to release new content in the coming weeks and continue refining their production process. Customer feedback remains central to the brand. Anyone who reaches out through social media or email communicates directly with the founders.

For Miami readers, the brand has ties to the local community. Elisha is a South Florida native, and Skye plans to connect further with the region through run clubs, padel events, and local retailer partnerships.

Why Skye Matters

Skye represents a small team working with discipline, intention, and a commitment to higher standards. They are not building a product around shortcuts or marketing trends. They are building around ingredient integrity, responsible sourcing, and genuine performance nutrition. For consumers who value what goes into their food, Skye is a brand worth following.
